ISS Facilities Services - Landscaping is a grounds maintenance and landscaping company specialising in fine turf; sports ground maintenance; amenity areas; gardens; void maintenance; cemeteries and burial services; hard and soft landscaping works; street cleansing; mechanical sweeping; arboriculture; weed control; interior plant maintenance; snow clearance and gritting works.

Why did you participate in the Submission Impossible programme?
The demands expected of companies and the clients during the various procurement stages has increased dramatically over the past couple of years and we wanted to enhance our knowledge of the whole process of PQQs, tender submissions, etc as well as to find out what we could expect in the future.
The Submission Impossible programme was going to allow us to achieve this as well as hearing the views from a client's perspective.
What were the main benefits of attending?
Attending the workshops without doubt improved our overall knowledge of the whole submission process. It was very useful to be able to speak one to one with procurement specialists from local authorities and other public sector organisations.
Sources of tenders/leads information were also provided and having the time to network with the other attendees was also very worthwhile.
You can never stop learning in this game!
In what way has your tendering process changed/improved?
- we now hold regular weekly business development meetings across all regions
- all PQQs and tender submissions are rigorously reviewed before being sent out
- with input across all management levels of the business, bid/no bid decisions are taken earlier
Overall changes have led to an increase in scores awarded at both the PQQ stage and the quality side of the tender process.
Towards the end of last year we were awarded a multi million pound contract with Aberdeen City Council for fine turf and sports ground maintenance which commenced on 1st April 2010 so we are ticking the right boxes.
Any tips you would like to share?
- Read the documentation clearly and understand what is required of you.
- Always provide support and evidence for statements made in your submission.
- Provide all of the information requested. If you cannot for whatever reason, ask for advice.
- The client can only evaluate what you have submitted and cannot refer to any previous knowledge or experience they have had with you unless stated in your submission - so do not make any assumptions.
And last but not least - 5. Do not be put off by the documentation. You can always ask for help.
