Launch of Community Wealth Building Consultation

The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on Community Wealth Building (CWB) legislation, which is a key practical means to realise the Scottish wellbeing economy vision.

What is Community Wealth Building (CWB)?

Community Wealth Building is a way of transforming Scotland's local and regional economies by tackling long-lasting economic challenges. CWB grows the influence which communities have on their economy and ensures that they benefit more from the wealth which they help to generate.

This is done through considering how the public, private, third and community sectors work together to generate, circulate and retain wealth in their communities.

Supplier Engagement and Community Wealth Building

An early pioneer behind the ethos of Community Wealth Building, the Supplier Development Programme (SDP) has been working to champion early engagement between primary contractors and local businesses. A Community Wealth Building stage featured at the 2021 and 2022 Meet the Buyer events, to actively engage small businesses in opportunities in and around local supply chains and on worksites, particularly in remote areas of Scotland. SDP has also supported the launch of Community Wealth Building strategies in partnership with local authorities, such as Stirling Council and through the 2021 Ayrshire Meet the Buyer event.

Gillian Cameron, Programme Manager of the Supplier Development Programme (SDP), is also working with the Scottish Government to represent suppliers' views into the development of the consultation on Community Wealth Building.

She said: “Being part of the Scottish Government Community Wealth Building Steering Group meetings has allowed SDP to share our unparalleled experience and vision for where change, including legislative change, might be required to increase local suppliers' capability of more successfully participating in the spending pillar in particular."

The CWB legislation will help support and compliment the good work that is driven via the Sustainable Procurement Duty to encourage a range of economic, social and environmental benefits and I would encourage all to read and respond.
