Scottish Government's new construction policy note (CPN)
The Scottish Government has published a new construction policy note (CPN) highlighting the publication of new guidance within the Client Guide to Construction Projects on sustainability in construction projects.
The new chapter 18 of the Project Initiation and Business Cases Handbook, provides an overview of the client’s role in planning for sustainability in construction projects, particularly during the project initiation phase.
The guidance looks at the three pillars of sustainability:
- Socially sustainable – demonstrating socially responsible leadership through the delivery of healthy and inclusive outcomes.
- Environmentally sustainable – actively protecting biodiversity and the environment through the adoption of a whole life approach and effective mitigation strategies.
- Economically sustainable – enabling inclusive economic growth through fair and resilient practices.
The guidance aims to support those managing construction projects to consider sustainability at every life cycle stage.
The Scottish Government’s guidance, the Client Guide to Construction Projects, consists of three handbooks. Handbook One: Project Initiation and Business Cases, Handbook Two: Construction Procurement, and Handbook Three, which provides guidance on the construction phase.
The new guidance is in response to the Scottish Government’s commitment to ending Scotland’s contribution to climate change. It plans to do this by 2045, in a fair and just way.
