Support NatureScot’s Peatland Restoration in the Ben Lui Nature Reserve
Ben Lui Nature Reserve, Nature Scot is looking for a suitably qualified contractor to deliver peatland restoration on 173 ha of the Nature Reserve in northern Argyll.
Peatland restoration plays a critical role in Scotland’s response to the Climate Change and Biodiversity emergencies. 75% of Scotland’s peatlands are degraded and they release around 15% of Scotland’s GHG emissions, this is the largest source of emissions after transport.
Restoring peatlands is one of the most effective ways of locking in carbon, offering a clear nature-based solution to both the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. The aim of this restoration work is to remediate degraded peatland features and raise the water table to levels compatible with near-natural hydrological dynamics.
The works required by this contract are:
- Conduct peatland restoration on 173ha of blanket bog over 2 areas of Ben Lui nature reserve. An upper area lies to the west of Meall nan Gabhar at 550-700m and the lower ground lies to the east of this hill at 400-600m altitude. A steep cliff lies between these. Access is via FLS tracks from Strath Orchy to the north.
- The work required is mainly upland blanket bog erosional features such as hags and gullies and some peat pans. There are a few drains present in the eastern area.
- Works are intended to be delivered between 1 September 2027 and 30 January 2028 using excavators. Peatland restoration techniques will follow the Peatland Action restoration techniques compendium.
A contract notice has been published on Public Contracts Scotland (PCS) where interested parties can access additional information and express their interest.
The time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is Wednesday 23 September 2026 at 12 noon.
